We had a singular veterans day today. We started by taking some Thank you cards to the veterans in our family, which meant Blake & Poppy. We thanked them for serving in the armed forces with cookies. What's better than that? Then, since there was no school today due to the Holiday, we all
Haley, Ashton, Coral & Sam) hopped in the car for a short ride north to the Stephen Foster Memorial State Park. To our delight, we discovered that since it was Veterans Day, all the state parks had free admission! Now, If you don't know who Stephen Foster is, he is the guy who wrote all of those songs you know, but never knew the composer.
The ones like "Oh! Susanna", "Camptown races", "Way down upon the Suwanee River", and the like. He also wrote the famous song "Nelly Bly" (which I had never heard of, but it is apparently famous nonetheless). it was a fun new fact we discovered. We went through the museum that highlighted his songs, then we walked over to the craft area
where they had rope making, jewelry making, a blacksmith shop, and gift shop with great old pioneer style toys. They had a quilting shop too, but it was disappointing, just a woman making a quilt. We had lunch of sandwiches and chips, and let the kids play on the playground awhile before we walked around some more. Then we hiked a short trip down to the famous Suwanee River (it's a BLACK water river...yuck) to finish up our trip. After that, it was the short ride back home and naps for mom, N & J.
The kids had a great time making their own rope, and getting a little stone to make into a piece of jewelery. The blacksmith shop wasn't really open, so we just got to see the forge, but it was interesting anyway. All in all, a nice family trip.
